Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel

“Radical amazement”—Rabbi Abraham Heschel may have coined that term. January first is his birthday. He was an incredible Bible scholar and theologian whom I first met through my seminary studies. Here’s his basic response to life and to God:
Our goal should be to live life in radical amazement… Get up in the morning and look at the world in a way that takes nothing for granted. Everything is phenomenal; everything is incredible; never treat life casually. To be spiritual is to be amazed.

One of Heschel’s most well-known book series is The Prophets. The two-volume work became my first deep dive into some of the Eighth-Century BC prophets, whom I had long admired. Rabbi Heschel’s openness of spirit in writing about them let me know it’s always okay to bring my questions to God.
